Great Espresso At Home
Make Great Espresso At Home For Less
If you love espresso drinks - lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos, Americanos, or just straight espresso—there’s a good chance you’ve assumed making it at home is either too expensive, too complicated, or just won’t taste the same.
I used to think that too.
But here’s the truth: you can make shockingly good espresso at home without needing a $2,000 machine.
This is the simple setup I use, and it makes espresso that honestly beats the expensive pre-ground espresso tins. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The #1 Upgrade That Changes Everything: A Burr Grinder
The biggest reason most home espresso tastes weak or flat is simple:
Pre-ground coffee goes stale fast.
And espresso is picky. It needs the right grind type, grind size, and it needs it fresh. That’s why I use a burr grinder and grind my beans right before brewing.
My Grinder
OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
Stainless steel burrs, one-touch automatic smart grind
This grinder gives me a consistent grind that works incredibly well for espresso, and it keeps things easy and repeatable.
The Beans Starbucks Espresso Roast Whole Bean
Before anyone rolls their eyes at Starbucks—hear me out.
Starbucks Espresso Roast whole beans are reliable, easy to find, and they make a strong, bold espresso that works great in milk based drinks.
What I use
Starbucks Whole Bean Coffee – Dark Roast – Espresso Roast – 100% Arabica
And here’s the big thing:
When you grind them fresh with a burr grinder, the flavor comes alive in a way that pre-ground coffee just can’t match.
In my opinion, a fresh grind of these beans can actually surpass the expensive espresso tins like Illy.
The Machine CASABREWS 3700 Essential Espresso Machine
This is what pulls the shots.
CASABREWS 3700 Essential Espresso Machine
20 Bar, stainless steel cappuccino & latte machine
It’s simple, looks clean, and gets the job done.
And yes it produces crema when everything is dialed in.
My Simple Espresso Method
This is the part I love: no complicated coffee nerd stuff required.
Step 1: Set the grinder to the finest setting
Yep. The finest.
Espresso needs a very fine grind to build pressure and create that rich shot with crema.
(If you are using the burr grinder I recommend others may need adjusting)
Step 2: Grind fresh every time.
Grinding right before brewing is the cheat code.
Fresh ground coffee smells better, tastes better, and pulls better espresso. Period.
Step 3: Fill the portafilter and tamp it down firmly.
You want the coffee packed evenly so water flows through it correctly. The goal is to push the air out of the coffee. Once it's flat and solid, you don't need to push harder. You don’t need to push too hard, just compact it.
Tip: Press straight down, not angled.
Even pressure matters more than brute strength.
Step 4: Pull the shot
You’re looking for espresso that pours smoothly and builds a crema layer on top.
Run one cycle of hot water through the portafilter without coffee before the first shot. This pre-heats the internal pipes and the metal filter for a hotter, better-tasting drink.
The Casabrews machine handles the very fine grind with no problem. If you are using a different machine you may need to adjust your grind size.
Pro Secret - The Puck Screen
51mm Puck Screen
If you want to take your shots to the next level for about $10, grab a puck screen. It’s a thin, reusable stainless steel mesh disk that you place right on top of the coffee grounds before locking in the handle. It does two things: it distributes water more evenly for a better-tasting shot, and it keeps your machine’s brew head perfectly clean. It’s the easiest "Level 2" upgrade you can make this year.
What This Setup Lets You Make
Once you have espresso at home, you can make basically any drink you want.
Here are the easy ones:
Straight Espresso
Quick, strong, and perfect if you like bold flavor.
Flat White
Espresso + silky steamed milk
Latte
Espresso + more steamed milk
Cappuccino
Espresso + steamed milk + more foam
Americano
Espresso + hot water
This one is underrated if you want something like drip coffee, but better.
Extra Tips to Make It Even Better. Without Becoming a Coffee Snob.
Here are a few small things that make a big difference
✅ Warm your cup first
Even just rinsing it with hot water helps keep your espresso from cooling too fast.
✅ Use filtered water
Espresso is mostly water. If your water tastes weird, your coffee will too.
✅ Keep your grinder consistent
Don’t change settings constantly. Find what works and stick with it.
✅ If your crema disappears fast, don’t panic
Crema depends on freshness, roast level, grind size, and pressure.
You’ll still get great espresso even if the crema isn’t perfect every time.
Final Thoughts
If you like espresso drinks and you’re tired of paying cafĂ© prices or waiting in lines, this setup is one of the best upgrades you can make at home.
It’s not complicated. It’s not “fancy.”
It’s just a solid routine that makes espresso that tastes legit.
Fresh beans + burr grinder + a decent espresso machine = you’re in business.
And once you get used to making it at home…
it’s hard to go back.
