Red Pepper Chinese Restaurant | Lawrence, KS - REVIEW

Red Pepper Chinese Restaurant | Lawrence, KS

Address: 847 Indiana St, Lawrence, KS 66044
Visit Type: Dinner
Total Cost: $25.69 (before tip)
Overall Verdict: Yes I’d go back.

Quick Verdict

Red Pepper is a solid “college-town Chinese spot” that delivers where it matters: the food tastes better than you expect for the price, portions are generous, and service is smooth. It’s not trying to be elevated or pretty—and that’s the main thing holding it back from being a slam dunk.

Best for: Casual dinner, quick takeout, low-key date night, students
Skip if: You want fancy plating or an “elevated” sit-down experience
What I’d order again: General Tso’s Chicken

What We Ordered

Entrees

Beef with Broccoli (came with rice + crab rangoon)
Classic combo, but the sauce had an “extra beefy” broth-like vibe that made it taste a little different than the standard version. Not bad—just unexpected.

General Tso’s Chicken (came with rice + crab rangoon)
✅ Best bite of the night.
Crispy outside, tender chicken inside, and the sauce was flavorful without being too hot. It hits the American Chinese takeout sweet spot.

Drinks

Coke (can)
A little different than fountain, but not a deal breaker.

Service + Atmosphere

Service: Friendly and smooth
We got seated right away, and the timing from ordering to food arriving felt right.

Atmosphere: Clean, simple, and what you expect
Not fancy, not trying to be. Comfortable enough for a low-key dinner.

Noise level: Moderate

The Good

  • Food: General Tso’s Chicken was the star - crispy, tender, and sauce that’s flavorful without being overpowering.

  • Service: Friendly staff, smooth experience, good pacing.

  • Atmosphere: Clean, not too busy, easy and comfortable.

The Miss

Two things kept it from being a complete slam dunk:

  1. Presentation needs work.
The food tasted above average, but it didn’t look like it. A couple small upgrades would make the whole meal feel more polished.

  2. Beef with Broccoli sauce tasted “extra beefy.”
Still recognizable as the dish, but the sauce leaned more beef-broth than classic takeout style.

Simple fixes that would level this place up:

  • Put someone in charge of making plates look more intentional.

  • Consider tweaking that Beef with Broccoli sauce closer to the classic flavor.

Portions + Value

Portions: Excellent for the price
This was generous, filling, and didn’t feel skimpy anywhere.

Value: Strong
For $25.69 before tip, it felt like a great deal. Honestly, I’d pay a little more if the presentation and small details were tightened up—because the cooking is already doing its job.

Food Breakdown

  • Taste: 8/10 (mainly because the Beef with Broccoli sauce was a little odd)

  • Portion size: 10/10

  • Temperature + freshness: 10/10

  • Presentation: 5/10

If You Go

Best time to visit: Weekday dinner if you want it quieter
Parking notes: On-site parking
Reservation needed? No

Final Call

Would I return? Yes.
Red Pepper delivers good food, big portions, and a smooth experience, with a few polish issues that are totally fixable. If the General Tso’s is that solid, there’s probably more on the menu worth trying—especially for the price.
